Hospitals, Spoons and the ‘P’ Word

Hello, there. I hope you are having a fantastic Tuesday. I’m currently writing from a room that’s eerily similar to one I occupied in my first year of university (minus the bullying that happened daily…thank god) and it’s rather nice to be back in such a social environment but with less of the stress this time round. This week I’ve been working at a Talent Development Program at my university and it’s been a lot of fun. I’m mentoring a group of soon-to-be undergraduate students and am helping them to complete a presentation on a particular topic. The presentation itself will be assessed by professors of the university, so I can imagine they’re feeling a little intimidated at present (though I know they can do it!). It is a lot of work, but it’s a breath of fresh air to be back in university working with students and my group are all wonderful.

Despite the fantastic week, I have had a fair few appointments/medical emergencies and my spoon supplies are feeling just a little bit depleted so I’m snuggled in bed as a consequence (for the ‘Spoon Theory’, if you don’t know what it is already, head over to But You Don’t Look Sick . It has become a fantastic way for many with disabilities/chronic illnesses to articulate their experiences to those without chronic conditions). This all started on Friday. Things were relatively great until then and I was just about managing to cope with things/have enough spoons to do the things I wanted to. Michael, a close friend from university came over, (he has been working on the same project as myself at uni so came to stay with me) and we spent lots of time catching up, sipping G&Ts and watching wonderfully silly things on tv. It was fabulous…

… until Friday afternoon. We went for Italian food, which seemed innocuous enough. And so we enjoyed pizzas and chatted a while and then strolled home feeling rather content.

Until my body decided it had other things to do, that is.

It all started with itching…lots and lots of intense itching all over my scalp and face, which made me want to scratch my skin to shreds. It all happened so quickly but by the time we got to my flat I was so uncomfortable I tore off my clothes and desperately hopped into a cold shower. Nothing was alleviating my skin and by this point I was covered head-to-toe in a violent, angry, itchy white and red rash. Nothing escaped; it was all over my back, my chest, my legs…and maybe unsurprisingly, I began to panic. I became dizzy and light-headed and by this point I was running around the flat naked (I know, poor Mike!). We took the decision to ring an ambulance as soon as I found I was struggling to breathe and the paramedics burst through the door to me, completely stark-naked, struggling to breathe in a heap on the floor. It was probably hilarious.

Turns out I had a severe allergic reaction, although I’m yet to find out what it was brought on by. I was given a strong dose of anti-histamine by injection and was offered to be taken to hospital. I politely declined and thanked the wonderful paramedics for all their help (whilst apologising for my initial lack of clothing…im never going to live that down, am I?!) and that was that. it was over almost as quickly as it had started but I have been strongly advised to go for an allergy test.

Not only that, but yesterday I went to see a consultant neurologist for my hemi. The fabulous news is she’s referring me to orthotics, physios AND an occupational therapist, which I’m absolutely thrilled with and I’m hoping they’ll all be able to relieve my pain/help out even if only slightly. it would be a fantastic help to the quality of my life. Today I went to my weekly pain management appointment which was painful, but I am starting to see results in terms of muscular pain so I’m willing to put up with the short-term pain for now.

Tonight I have been thinking, and I’m just beginning to realise that this will probably be the way things are for a while this year, but I think that’s okay. I know I shouldn’t feel guilty about receiving all this treatment but I do, I really do. Sometimes I sit and think that I make too much fuss/that I shouldn’t be feeling the way I do because, although I do struggle with pain and hemi and MH and everything else, I am so SO lucky to have been given a life like this one. I guess it’s okay that there will be hospitals and things probably for the rest of my life, and I need to understand that I’m entitled to that. Really it just makes me feel hugely fortunate to have such wonderful healthcare available, because I honestly can’t fault any of the care from my recent appointments. I don’t really know where I’m going with this post, but I felt like I needed a good old talk about things. I think tonight i’ll just stay in bed and wind down.

Hope you’re having a great Tuesday, whatever you’re doing.

Event: #HBAlPorto

Hello there! If you’ve been reading my posts recently you might be aware that I recently attended the Hull Bloggers’ Summer meet. After months of anticipation, the day finally arrived and it definitely didn’t disappoint!

Raffle Goodies

The event was held at a fabulous venue called Al Porto, situated overlooking the marina in Hull’s city centre. They are passionate about creating and serving delicious and authentic Italian cuisine, in a down-to-earth, rustic atmosphere, which suited our event perfectly! Judging by the lovely nibbles we got to try, their food is obviously crafted with care and attention. You can check out their website here.

On arrival we were greeted by the lovely Alex, Jenny and Kat, who organised the event, and it was great to catch up with bloggers I’ve previously met and make friends with the newbies of our little community! The event started with a good old natter (obviously!) accompanied by a rather delicious #HullBloggers cocktail, which was perfect for cooling us all down on such a humid day. There were a few brands set up to provide several demonstrations; some of which were familiar and others perhaps not so recognisable to some, which included Lush, Weleda and Viridian. On the picture above you can see the array of fabulous raffle prizes that were on offer over the course of the day, and all proceeds went to a very worthy cause: The Eve Appeal .

After some lovely demos from each of the companies, it was raffle time! Some of the products donated to the raffle were absolutely gorgeous, and included gifts from one of my favourite jewellery companies; Links of London and Pandora. There were many different prizes on offer, including make-up, premium skincare, accessories and even underwear! I was extremely lucky to come away with something I’ve had my eye on for a long time: a MisfitWearables Shine Fitness Tracker! InstagramCapture_1fc6d1e9-7925-4997-90ae-01b3ef414ee4I have been wearing the device daily since I won it, and a review will soon follow. Spoiler: I am extremely impressed so far!

At the end of the raffle Alex presented some spot prizes, which ranged from ‘The Best Pre-meet Selfie’ to ‘The Most Excited Blogger’. To my astonishment I was given a spot-prize as ‘The Loveliest Blogger’, and I have to admit I was completely shocked and didn’t see that coming at all! It was a very thoughtful thing and my prize consisted of some very interesting-looking chocolate goodies courtesy of IQ Choc; I can’t WAIT to try them out!

All-in-all I’d say the event was a complete success, and to top it off we went home with an impressive number of goodies to try out! Here’s a little sneak preview of some of the brands that were generous enough to get involved in our fantastic event.

Something Sparkly

Hi there! If you’ve been reading you may remember me mentioning my recent graduation from the University of Hull with my Ba Hons degree. It was a wonderful day, and because I’m a super lucky girl, I was treated to a gorgeous piece of jewellery to celebrate!

Now, if any of you know me, you’d probably know that I’m really rather fond of jewellery, particularly if it’s sparkly. It’s definitely a favourite thing of mine and I’m extremely lucky to own some truly gorgeous pieces. Jewellery is something that holds so many memories for me, and I truly take comfort in wearing pieces that mean a lot to me. I have pieces that have been handed down through family, and also from a range of designers including Links of London, Pandora, Daisy and lesser-known designers, like Charlotte Verity. I also have a gorgeous, bold and bright ring by Thomas Sabo. I bought this for myself when I completed my A-Levels, and it was the first piece of Thomas Sabo I had the pleasure of owning. It’s very ‘me’; bright, unusual and definitely not subtle. Plus, I love a good strong red lip so it was just the perfect ring for me.

red lips

red lips

The ring itself is solid sterling silver, and is enamelled over the top with a bright, shiny red enamelling. Considering I’ve had it for nearly four years and have worn it regularly, it has barely scratched at all and has remained bright and in-your-face ever since!

I’ve known that Thomas Sabo has long been famed for quirky, unusual designs and this definitely matches that description. For a long time I’ve been lusting over a gorgeous green tree frog ring, and to be honest, when dad kindly offered to buy me a graduation present I was hoping to find that very piece! After a few hours of searching, I couldn’t actually track it down, so I decided to look elsewhere. Being a big Links of London fan, I was thinking about getting one of their Skull friendship bracelets, like the rose gold version here. But, I have many Links of London bracelets including a silver sweetie, worry beads silk bracelet, and rose gold vermeil xs effervescent friendship bracelet, and as much as I love them, I thought I’d search for something a little bit different. That’s where Thomas Sabo came in and saved the day!

thomas sabo

Every time I’ve been into a Thomas Sabo store, I’ve gazed longingly at their huge selection of adorable, intricately detailed charms. There’s a charm to suit everyone; from sparkly, zirconia-encrusted animals to tiny red cabriolets and simple silver initials, the choice of charms on offer is enormous! As I was browsing through House of Fraser, I came across a Thomas Sabo stand with a gorgeous sterling silver necklace on display. I soon learnt this necklace was created so that the wearer could wear multiple charms on it, and this really intrigued me! My mind was made up; the necklace was something really unusual and special, and i could continue to add to it in the years to come. So with my mind made up, it was time to pick out some wonderful charms!

thomas sabo

Dad suggested I pick out three (I was completely spoilt, I know!) and so the first I chose was a pretty obvious choice…a seriously cute mortarboard, complete with a tiny tassel!

mortarboard

The mortarboard itself is enamelled in a bright, shiny black enamelling, with a tiny, moving tassel attached to the top. It’s the perfect charm to remember my graduation day by.

necklace

The other two charms weren’t really at all related to graduation, but they are extremely intricate and very lovely! I saw a tiny, sparkly wonderful octopus charm, and I just new I had to have him!

octopus

The octopus is also crafted from sterling silver, but is covered in a gorgeously sparkly green zirconia pave. He also has lovely black zirconia eyes, and he’s seriously very sweet. Though he is small, he is indeed perfectly formed, and if I’m honest my photos really do not do him justice!

octopus

I still had one more charm to find, and so I popped into Hugh Rice jewellers to see their selection, as sometimes the charms on offer differ from store to store. Again, there were so many wonderful charms to gawk at, but one in particular caught my eye because it is so unusual. It is the gorgeous caviar charm, and is definitely a little bit of something special!

caviar

caviar

The charm itself resembles a pot of caviar, and so the front is enamelled to emulate that. The ‘lid’ of the charm is plated 14k gold, and when flicked open, reveals a glistening pot of ‘caviar’ studded with black zirconia and crafted out of sterling silver. It’s seriously gorgeous, and such a stunning and unusual piece. All three charms attach to the rings on the necklace with sterling silver lobster clasps, so it’s easy to remove/add new charms whenever you fee like it!

I have been enjoying this piece very much, and I’m so fortunate to own such a gorgeous item. You can see if any of the charms take your fancy over on Thomas Sabo , or pop into a jewellers and ask to see their selection of items as they vary store to store. I’ll be sure to post some pictures of the necklace on an outfit post or similar, as it is very long, but I really recommend checking out Thomas Sabo if you fancy something unusual and very intricately detailed.

I hope you’re having a great week whatever you’re up to!

Things I’m Loving

Hello there! I’m back with something a little different today. I thought I’d share some of the things I’m currently really liking. If any of you follow me on twitter you might have heard the news that I will be graduating with a 2:1 English degree. My ceremony is on Tuesday (i’m excited and nervous and everything in between!). I have finally applied for my masters place in English research, so hopefully I’ll hear back about that really soon! For now, here are a few things I’m loving:

1) Water (and a good water bottle to transport it in!)

Yes. I am aware I just said water. But I really, really am loving it at the minute. As you may know here in the UK we’ve been experiencing some glorious weather, so keeping hydrated  has been very important. I recently purchased an Apana glass water bottle with silicone protective sleeve from TK Maxx. This was reduced to £7, and I’m really glad I opted for it. Admittedly, the colour isn’t quite what I’d usually go for, but I have to say I’m loving the inspirational positive messages imprinted into the silicone sleeve. This also has the added bonus of protecting the bottle from scrapes or knocks. I am used to using plastic bottles, but drink flavours always seem to permeate the surface leaving a noticeable change in the scent of the bottle, which i find pretty unpleasant. Glass doesn’t do this, and so I’m hoping it won’t leave me feeling disappointed!

bottle

bottle

It’ll be great for throwing into my backpack on busy days. The only downside so far is that when full the bottle is considerably heavier than a plastic bottle. However, it’s a price I’m willing to pay! See if you can grab one for yourself over at TK Maxx.

2) Graduation Presents

Because my boyfriend is also graduating this year, I thought I’d treat him to an new leather wallet. The one I picked is by a brand called Osprey. I’ve had one of their handbags previously, and I know they are great quality. The wallet is really sleek and smart, and was an absolute bargain compared to the RRP: £16.99 instead of £80! Again, nip toTk Maxx. They have a great selection of things in there. Be prepared to hunt for the things you want; sometimes there’s no duplicates of items so be prepared to look…I promise with perseverance you will unearth some bargains!

osprey

I like the fact the wallet comes in a smart presentation box, and I’m hoping it will make a lovely gift.

3) Natural Lipsticks

I’m usually really into my brightly-coloured lipsticks. I have a particular love of bright blue-based reds, and usually go for ones that are matte in appearance, like Revlon’s matte lipstick in Really Red. I’m also a big fan of Revlon’s matte colourburst balms, in particular Standout; a gorgeous deeper toned red that applies easily and feels amazing on the lips. I have also tried a few from Bourjois; two Rouge Edition Velvet lipcolours in Grand Cru and Personne ne Rouge, and one of theirRouge Edition lipsticks in shade 13, that has a satin/slightly glossy finish. All of them are gorgeous, and I love the opportunity to flaunt a good red lip whenever I can. However, since graduation is coming up, I decided I needed something fuss-free and fairly neutral so I wasn’t having to touch-up my makeup often. So, after what felt like hours swatching lots of neutral or ‘my lips but better’ shades, I settled on a few items from Bourjois: two Color Boost crayons and a Sweet Kiss Gloss.

make up

As I have mentioned, neutral lips aren’t really something I tend to go for. I have fairly pigmented lips naturally, and find a lot of nude shades in particular make me look really washed out. These neutral colours however may have just changed my mind…

gloss

I’m not too sure whether this photo is completely accurate in terms of true-to-life colour (the first picture with all three is pobably the most accurate in terms of colour representation), but this is the colour Incognit-rose. It is a cool-toned rose gloss, that has a creamy, high-gloss finish free from glitter/sparkle. This is very much a MLBB (my lips but better…I’m becoming a bit obsessed with that phrase at the moment!) gloss, or at least it is for me and my pigmented lips. It isn’t overly ‘in your face’and it doesn’t make a huge statement, but what it does do is provide the lip with a polished, well-put-together look. It’s just enough to make you feel made up without feeling overtly so.

sweet kiss

I think the packaging is really smart, and I really like the applicator that comes with this gloss as it is a little brush. You don’t need to take much time applying it because it’s pretty fool-proof and very easy to do. Bourjois claims that it gives long-lasting hydration of !0 hours, and whilst i think this is a fairly overly-exaggerated claim, the formula is hydrating and moisturising, and doesn’t at all dry me out. The gloss does have a slight scent, though; all I can liken it to is a slightly fruity, sweet smell. It isn’t at all offensive but it’s definitely something to consider if scents in cosmetics annoy you. Lastly, it isn’t super sticky (hooray!) but your hair will probably stick to it if it so happens to become attracted to your lips, particularly in blustery weather. I used to LOVE Lancome’s Juicy Tubes, but when wearing them my hair was constantly stuck to my mouth. When I was sixteen I used to save up my pocket money and spend it all on one tube of their Juicy Tube gloss. Juicy tubes are SUPER sticky, and even to this day I can’t really tell you why I continued to purchase them. Hopefully i won’t get into the same sticky situation with this gloss!

macchiato(1)proudly naked

Above are the two Colour Boost lip crayons I purchased. When I spotted these I couldn’t help but think of Clinique’s Chubby Sticks; they look fairly similar, have the same sheer yet buildable coverage and pigment and they are even packaged in a similar way in a twist up stick, so no sharpening is needed! The main difference with these though are that they’re a fraction of the price. I’d LOVE to try a Chubby Stick, I really would. But at the minute I cannot justify spending up to £17 on one. These sell for £7.99, which is far, far cheaper in comparison. Bourjois claims that these also have 10 hour-moisturisation properties, but they also have an added SPF of 15 and have ‘waterproof colour’.

Sweet macchiato

This is the darker of the two lip crayons and is in the colour Sweet Macchiato. It is a mid-tone warm brown, with no shimmer or sparkle. When first applied the texture is creamy, and has a subtle gloss and sheen to it. Though this sheen wears off, the colour does slightly stain the lips and so leaves them pigmented for longer. These feel incredible; they feel like a really hydrating lip balm, or what Bourjois label the ‘bare lip sensation’. The colour is almost verging on a brick-red shade when layered very intensely, but i prefer to wear it sheer for a flush or colour. I’m really impressed…can you tell that neutral colours are growing on me?!

naked

Finally we have Proudly naked, which I think is my favourite of the two. This is very natural looking once applied. It is definitely MLBB: it makes me feel like I’ve made an effort, even if all I’ve managed to do is throw a bit of blusher on my face. Again, this lacks shimmer/sparkle but does have the gorgeous subtle sheen as seen in the Sweet macchiato shade.

WP_20150710_006

Here are all the shades side-by-side. As you can see they’re all very similar but I recommend each one. I’m really going to have difficulty deciding which to wear on my graduation!

WP_20150710_008

Here’s just a quick swatch of all three on the back of my hand: the top one is the Sweet Kiss gloss in Incognit-rose, the second is the Color Boost in Proudly naked and the third is the Color Boost in Sweet macchiato.

Now, I know it seem a little bit extravagant to have bought all three, but Boots right now have 3 for 2 on selected Bourjois products, as seen here. Considering I was willing to pay £16 for one of Clinique’s lip pops in Bare pop, getting all three Bourjois products for just short of £16 is a pretty good deal.

I’m sorry this post has been so long, but I hope all of the above things have given you some inspiration! I hope you’re enjoying the start of the weekend whatever you may be doing!

Happy Days

Hello there. I hope you’re having a great week! The sun has finally decided to appear and the weather has been absolutely gorgeous! Typically though I’ve left a lot of my summery clothes back home but I can’t wait to get my hands on them. I’m heading back tomorrow for a week’s visit home before coming back to my university house to sort out my postgraduate applications and other admin stuff, like doctor’s appointments and boring things. But I do have to say things have been really lovely and relaxed since my essays have been in. There’s been lots of catching up with people and good byes and celebrations, but it’s been really great to have a change of events. As much as I enjoy writing essays it can get a little monotonous at times, but I know very soon the boredom will kick in and I’ll be itching to do some more reading!

Last weekend was the end of year ball on my university campus. The end of year ball is a big event at the end of the academic year where hundreds of students gather together for a night of celebrating. There was live music (and the first time I’ve seen Tom Odell), chocolate fountains, a fun fair, burger stalls, and the inside of the union building was transformed into a fantastical underwater-themed world. It was really great. Of course, I drank a little too much, especially considering I’m not supposed to be drinking at the moment, but it was a really good laugh and it was wonderful to bump into some of my friends. It’s really sad that I won’t get to see everyone as frequently as I’d wish to, but I’m sure our paths will cross again. Here are some snaps from the end of year ball. I decided to go for a long flowing printed lace dress in navy and cream, and I accessorised with some bright red accessories to give a pop of colour. Any one who knows me will know how much I love the colour red; it is my favourite to brighten up an outfit, particularly if worn as a bright red lip!

me and juliet two

This is me with my wonderful friend Juliet who I miss already! My dress is by Fire Los Angeles and I bought it at TK Maxx for a mere £16.99! I’m really into bright prints and I thought this dress could be dressed up or down. The lipstick I’m wearing is one of my favourite red shades, and is the Bourjois Rouge Edition in No.13. It’s finish is satiny and very moisturising. I also recently purchased Barry M’s nail paint in Bright Red, which was a perfect match. My bag is by Golunski and was also from TK Maxx…can you guess how much I like it there yet?! It was great to get dressed up for a change; unfortunately this doesn’t happen as much as I’d like!

me and amy

This is my wonderful friend Amy, and I’m very fortunate to have bumped into her as I don’t see her very often. This was just after I scoffed a burger waiting for my friends to go on the dodgems…the perks of not being able to go on funfair rides I guess! Burgers are always acceptable, right?

me izzy ash beth two

Well I think it’s safe to say we were all a little bit tipsy on this picture, but these are some of my other lovely friends and it was a pleasure to spend the night celebrating with them.

me end of year ball

This is my make up look. I kept my eyes fairly simple to let the red lip stand out. Luckily my hair was behaving and dried to soft waves, so I didn’t actually style it at all! It was a really enjoyable night and I’m sad it’s over if I’m honest!

Yesterday was a fantastic day. I got to see Amy (pictured above) for one last little coffee catch-up. It was emotional having to say good bye but I’m so glad I met her. She’s such a wonderful person, and never fails to put a smile on my face. I’ll miss seeing her around so often. I also got together with a few of the Hull Bloggers for some retail therapy and a good natter. You can check out their blogs; Charley , Jenny and Beckie . It was lovely to spend the afternoon with them wandering around Hull, especially as the weather was so beautiful. I’m hoping we’ll have another catch-up very soon!

Well I came to my room about an hour ago and vowed that I would start packing/tidying up…unfortunately that hasn’t happened and I’ve just been watching friends and eating Angel Delight. Send me some motivation; I’d seriously appreciate it!

Hope you’ve been having a great week.

Look after yourself!

The Body Shop Haul

Hi there! if you’ve been reading recently you may have seen me mentioning some products I recently purchased from The Body Shop. During exam season  neglected myself a bit so thought some pampering goodies were needed. I used to love The Body Shop when I was younger. It was always a place I’d visit with my friends when shopping in Manchester, and we used to love picking up everything and smelling it! As much as I loved doing this, I never really had the funds to treat myself to anything, apart from the odd lip balm or two. Believe me, I used to have a HUGE obsession with lip balm and I did always like the scents and formulas of The Body Shop ones, but now I’m older I can justify spending a little more than the £2 I parted with at the age of fourteen, so I thought I’d diversify a little and try something new. Some of the products here are ones I’ve been using since Christmas. My boyfriend treated me to some products as part of a Christmas present, and ever since I’ve been dying to get my hands on some more products.

The Body ShopMy first visit to The Body Shop resulted in a few purchases to celebrate the end of my assignments. Self indulgent? Perhaps. But that didn’t stop me.

I’ve always had acne prone skin. Acne used to be something i had all the time growing up. It wasn’t just the odd pimple either, but loads and loads of painful, swollen, red bumps all over my face. It wasn’t a nice thing to contend with. I got the usual acne-related insults, the usual advice: ‘well if you stop wearing make up/wash your face it will go away!’ and people feeling the need to point out my acne as if I didn’t know it existed. My acne wasn’t just unsightly (or so i was led to believe) but it was extremely painful. Every time I moved my face it hurt. It was embarrassing and really not something i wanted to deal with. I tried a range of spot creams/washes, but of course my acne was more than just the odd spot so needed medical treatment. I used antibiotics, a vinegary liquid called zineryt, duac, and finally-whennothing else worked, they put me on a contraceptive pill that is usually prescribed for moderate-severe cases of acne called Dianette. I’m so glad to say that my skin is clear now. One of the biggest misconceptions about acne is that it’s caused by lack of cleanliness. This always frustrated me incredibly: believe it or not I had one of the most thorough skincare routines during my acne, and I always made sure i cleansed, toned and moisturised twice a day. My acne was hormonal, and as a result I still get the odd spot or two at certain times. But thankfully, for now at least, it’s under control. With all this in mind I decided to go for a skincare range that helps acne-prone skin, and The Body Shop do just that: their Tea Tree range.

Tea Tree washSkin clearing lotionminimiser

The first thing I picked up was the Tea Tree skin clearing wash. I was looking for a great, affordable wash to remove make up and keep my skin clear in the process and this really fit the bill. It smells very strongly of tea tree, which is no problem for me because I love the scent, but this is definitely something to keep in mind. It cost £5, but I know that the Body Shop have a lot of deals and voucher codes on so it’s just a case of looking around! I have been using it with a complexion brush, and mine is by a company called Spa Sister and was purchased at TK Maxx for £3.99. The idea is that it exfoliates and buffs the skin while using a cleanser, almost negating the need for a facial scrub which can sometimes be a little harsh. The bristles are soft enough so it’s not uncomfortable to use, yet stiff enough to remove any dirt or make up.

spa sisterbrush

It almost looks like a big toothbrush for you face, but do not fear; it’s really easy to use, especially with my hemi hand as it can be used mostly one-handed. I tend to wet my face, spread some of the facial wash on my skin, and buff the brush in circular motions upwards and all over my face and neck. I do avoid my eyes though; you’ll want to use a flannel or soft mitt for that. Then I just rinse my face with cool water to remove my make up, rinse the brush and leave to dry, then pat my skin dry.

This technique has really been working. It removes more make up than a standard make up wipe, and the tea tree leaves my skin feeling very refreshed.

Now, when I initially bought this, I didn’t have a toner, so I went on to apply the moisturiser without toning. However, I have now acquired one, so I sweep The Body Shop’s Seaweed Clarifying Toner across my  face before moving onto the moisturiser (I’ll explain my acquisition soon!)

This moisturiser is very light, and like the wash, it smells very strongly of tea tree. It feels really refreshing on my face and absorbs quickly.

Next in the range is the Tea Tree Pore Minimiser. I bought this in place of a primer as it said it would make a great base for make up. It does feel great under my foundation, however I wouldn’t say It noticeably minimises my pores. It is a great addition to my routine, though. I’m already noticing my skin is less oil and less likely to break out as a result of using this range, which is really great!

My next visit to the Body Shop was to buy my boyfriend some treats. He struggles with dry skin, so I decided to get him a set of the Seaweed range and this is where the toner comes in!

I bought the Seaweed Purifying Facial Cleanser, Seaweed Clarifying Toner and Seaweed Day Cream in a set, which saved a total of £8. Drew said he didn’t mind about having the toner, so I decided to try that instead. The toner isn’t harsh on skin, and yet leaves it feeling very refreshing whilst removing the last traces of my make up. Drew is using the cleanser with The Body Shop facial brush, which you can find here: http://www.thebodyshop.co.uk/skincare/accessories/facial-brush-with-lid.aspx . I asked him what he thought of his new goodies, and before now Drew hasn’t really used anything but soap on his face! He said: ‘it’s amazing…smells really fresh and leaves my skin feeling really clean. The brush is a good size to use, it gets everywhere you need to and because of the brush, you don’t need to use lots of cleanser so I can see it lasting. The dryness on my face is also improving and I think using both the cleanser and moisturiser is helping that.’ Result!

I also picked up the Mango Hand Cream. I’ve heard great things about the mango scent and I tried my friend’s Vineyard Peach hand cream and knew I needed to get one!

This hand cream is very light, absorbs quickly, and has a gorgeous summery scent. It’s perfect for putting in your bag for a burst of freshness during the day. Really impressed!

On the day, The Body Shop was giving 30% off to new members of their Love Your Body scheme. Buying the card cost £5, but you got a 50ml body butter and a free gift that was worth £23 (approximately…I can’t quite remember!). Either way. It was a great deal. Now I’ll get 10% off on every purchase when I present my card which is a  lovely bonus. I chose an olive body butter as the 50ml gift as it’s a scent I haven’t tried before.

The scent is very subtle, and the texture of this butter is quite thin in comparison to others from the range. It’s quite fresh feeling and very easily absorbed. To compare, I also have the raspberry, coconut, satsuma and grapefruit butters that I’ve purchased previously/been given.

Satsuma buttergrapefruit

The grapefruit butter is slightly thicker than the satsuma, and has a really zingy scent that smells fresh on your skin. The satsuma is just delicious-smelling, and is really lovely applied in the morning. It absorbs very quickly, and leaves a subtle scent for most of the day. In comparison, the coconut and raspberry butters are much thicker in consistency and really take time to work in. Raspberry is quite sweet, but not too sweet that it’s overpowering, and the coconut smell reminds me of holidays sat in the sun with a cocktail. Bliss! All of them are extremely moisturising, and I received another 50ml satsuma butter in the free gift which was very well received!

I also love the Body Shop’s beautifying oils. I apply them to my arms and legs for a little added sheen when I’m wearing short sleeved tops or dresses, and I apply a small amount to the ends of my hair when I get out of the shower and before my hair dries. I have the moringa scent, which has subtle floral notes, and the satsuma scent which is lovely and fruity. They absorb far quicker than the body butters, without feeling at all greasy.

This gift had a fair few products in it, all wrapped up with a lovely shower scrubber, or ‘lily’, as they call it. I received a small bottle of the Rainforest Shine, a small Coconut shower cream, small peppermint foot lotion, 30ml absinthe hand cream, 50ml pot of satsuma body butter and a full size shea butter lip butter. I was amazed that I had so many new things to try!

All of these products have completely fulfilled my expectations. The Shea butter lip butter is creamy and hydrating, perfect for applying before bed time. The foot lotion smells subtly of peppermint but keeps my feet moisturised and soft after a long day. I haven’t yet tried the shampoo or shower cream, but both smell absolutely lovely and I’m hoping they’ll lather up nicely and leave me feeling fresh and clean. The thing that surprised me the most was the Absinthe Purifying hand cream. The smell is extremely fresh and long lasting. It’s difficult to explain, but if you’re not keen on fruit scented hand creams then I suggest you pick this up. Again, it absorbs quickly leaving my skin hydrated but not greasy.

Overall I’m so incredibly pleased with my purchases. I feel so much better now that I’m taking a little more care of myself. I just have to stop myself from buying any of their Virgin Mojito or Green Tea range…they both smell incredible for summer! I hope this is a useful review, albeit a long one, but let me know if you have anything to say about the Body Shop or their products!

Hope you’ve had a great Monday,

I made it

Hello there, lovely reader (yes, you. I’m talking to you, you wonderful person). Happy Friday! Just thought I’d let you know what I’ve been up to since I last posted. On Tuesday I FINALLY handed in my fifth and final assignment. That means my third and final year of my undergraduate degree is over! It’s flown by. This past month has been seriously challenging. My body has been in a lot of pain (it’s aggravated by stress, long periods of sitting/standing etc) and as a result I’m really very tired. I’m currently writing this from my bed if I’m honest (but I am very comfortable here!)

Since my final hand-in I’ve been celebrating in my own little way. Nothing fancy or spectacular, but doing things that have really brought a smile to my face. Today I went out for the day to York, which was beautiful. The weather was glorious and we had some food at Ask Italian. You can currently get two courses for £10.95 (there are exclusions) but it’s seriously worth the money! All you have to do is look for the voucher online. Just type Ask Italian voucher into a search engine and one should come up. It’s really great value. Today I had the calamari to start, and a seafood risotto. It felt so fancy compared to food I’ve been eating during essays and was a real treat. We also went into the most fabulous book shop that had seven rooms stacked wall to wall with beautiful books. I came away with one (how could I resist!) that I think will be great towards my thesis preparation, though this is something I still need to apply for! it’ll get done soon, I’m sure.

I’ve also been buying some lovely pampering goodies to give myself some well-deserved TLC. I bought some things from The Body Shop to try, and I initially purchased a selection from their skin care range. My skin has really flared up due to assignment stress/pain, and I used to suffer with acne fairly badly, particularly when I was younger. It was so bad I was on medication, but thankfully it’s calmed down enormously. I still have acne-prone skin though, so i thought I’d give their tea tree range a go. I’ve never tried this range before, but so far, I’m really impressed. I also ended up buying a gift-set for my boyfriend and got some other little wonderful goodies because i couldn’t help myself. I’m going to write up a review/haul post of all the things I purchased just in case you might want to check them out for yourself. I think I’ve found some really great products that are helping me to look after myself, and unfortunately because of pain – and associated tiredness – there hasn’t been much time to make myself feel good, so I thought I was due a good pampering session. Besides, pampering is always acceptable!

Caffe nero treats

My boyfriend has gone back home today which is sad. I’ve been living with him for the past few weeks and he’s really helped me with managing my pain. He really seems to understand what I need and when, and I’m so grateful for that. We went out to town yesterday and did a little bit of shopping. The Caffe Nero iced drinks were a fabulous little treat. I had the chocolate and coconut frappe creme, and I highly recommend it!

Well, I’m really rather tired so I think it’s time for some painkillers and maybe an early night. The End of Year Ball is tomorrow, which will be very exciting. Here’s hoping for another glorious sunshine-filled day!

Here’s a picture of the Humber Bridge from the train. I just had to include this; there’s something about that view that really fills me with joy.

Hope you have a great start to your weekend, whatever you may be up to.

today

… Is a happy day. I have handed in my final undergraduate essay, managed to get to the doctors and also had a little walk around the shops. It’s great to finally feel able to do those things again! It’s been a difficult few months. They’ve been painful, physically exhausting, frustrating but it’s amazing I made it through (despite my current dishevelled appearance!) today is a happy day, and the start of good things to come. Long may this fabulous feeling continue.

best wishes this Tuesday evening!

I am feeling…

…a little scared today. Haven’t managed to sleep properly and my body is annoyed with me. I’m also worried because I didn’t plan to arrange my anxiety/depression meds prescription and the only free time I can sort it out is when my meds have ran out. just want to stay under the duvet today with all my teddies and blankets and not leave. It’s a shame I have stuff to do.
